Kindergarteners and technology?

I recently read an article about how much technology young children should be exposed to...which prompted me to recall the debate between should children watch tv or not...which led me back to the "way back machine" where I recalled the printing press was once banned...where would education be without the printing press...could oral education have survived?  ...I have come to the realization that technology has become an every day occurence in the lives of children.  Technology facilitates play, learning, and communication for youngsters.  Do your children ask "What does this do?" as you turn the page of a traditional book?  No.  Do your children ask "What does this do?" when they click the mouse or touch an app on the mobile devices?  Yes.  Does this prompt them to wonder what else the technology does?  Yes!  Are they motivated to continue to click and explore?  YES!  What do all of these things have in common?  Higher level critical thinking skills such as comparing and contrasting, analyzing, inferencing, and problem solving.

Let's face it; however, the knowledge gained from exposure to technology to engage the learner in higher level critical thinking skills is dependent upon frequency.  As educators and parents understand more about how young children use computers and technology, as well as how these devices enhance knowledge development, they will be better able to assess how how and when technology should be used with young children.

How often do your youngsters use technology to make sense of their worlds?
